Preliminary Program Grid for Malka Older

This is the Preliminary program schedule. Malka Older may or may not actually be on these items, but probably will. However, due to circumstances beyond our control, modifications to the program can occur throughout the convention.

Sunday 10:00 am: How We Imagine The Future and What It Says About Us (Ends at: 10:55 am) Bethesda
Panelists:Malka Older, Bud Sparhawk (M), K.M. Szpara, Fran Wilde
It's always fun to look at what sci-fi visionaries of the past thought the future would be like, what they got right (and what they didn't). But why did they imagine it the way they did? How was it affected by the world they lived in? Given the times in which we live, what sort of future should we be imagining?
Sunday 11:00 am: What Are The New Questions That SF/F Should Be Asking? (Ends at: 11:55 am) Rockville/ Potomac
Panelists:M'Shai Dash, Carolyn Ives Gilman, Malka Older, Nalin A. Ratnayake
SF in particular is meant to be a forward-looking genre. What questions should contemporary SFF writers be asking that they are not? What issues are being successfully addressed?
Sunday 12:00 pm: Political Dynamite (Ends at: 12:55 pm) Bethesda
Panelists:Sunny Moraine, James Morrow, Malka Older (M), Michael A. Ventrella
Writers and editors talk about how they address current events in their work and in social media--and what they don't.
Sunday 1:00 pm: Positive Science Fiction (Ends at: 1:55 pm) Bethesda
Panelists:Malka Older, Sarah Pinsker, Nalin A. Ratnayake, Bud Sparhawk (M)
Much SF these days is dystopian or grim. Why isn't there more positive SF? Jetse DeVries's anthology Shine demonstrated that it's possible to write positive SF even when dealing with issues such as climate change.
Sunday 2:30 pm: Malka Older Reading (Ends at: 2:55 pm) Frederick
Author:Malka Older
