Other things to do in Silver Spring

For those of you with Google Earth, you can down load this Keyhole Map File for Google earth which, when clicked on, should take you directly to downtown Silver Spring and identify the hotel, the nearby parking garage, and other points of interest

Check out a list of the best that Silver Spring has to offer.

Enjoy free internet access to the Silver Spring WiFi hotspot, the first free outdoor hotspot in Montgomery County, MD.

Looking for a film program? We have something even better. The American Film Institute's Silver Theater is just steps away with classic and current movies plus movie talks and more.

For what to do in terms of restaurants, shopping, arts & entertainment, and events checkout Downtown Silver Spring when not attending Capclave.

Want some local color? Visit the Silver Pass in the underground walkway between Georgia Avenue and Blair Mill Road.

Fear the Turtle. DC had the party animals. Boston has cows. And Maryland has turtles - giant sculptures of turtles that is. Four of these turtles are in Silver Spring. Can you find them all?

Hungry? The Washingtonian has a list of inexpensive Silver Spring restaurants.

Or use their search utility, click on neighborhood and scroll down past the DC neighborhoods to find Silver Spring

And a good source of cheap food within a short hop from the Capclave hotel is the City Place Mall, home to Burger King, Brass Hen (Chicken), Subway, Taco Uno, China City Express, plus a few slightly more upscale choices including a Noodles & Company.

The Capclave dealer's room has more science fiction books than you could read on a non-stop journey to Mars. But if your reading tastes are more varied, there's a huge Borders right a couple of blocks away. Also, for used books see Silver Spring Books, 938 Bonifant St., Silver Spring, Maryland (301) 587-7484. In the past, they've given a discount to those with Capclave ids.

And there's no reason why you should limit yourself to Silver Spring, MD. The nation's capital with monuments, museums, and plenty of politics provides plenty to do. The National Mall in Washington, DC is just a 20 minute train ride away! Take the metro Red Line in the direction of Shady Grove, get off at Metro Center, transfer to the Blue Line in the direction of Largo Town Center or the Orange Line in the direction of New Carrollton and get off at the Smithsonian stop. Go to the Smithsonian website to find out what's on exhibit at the African Art Museum; the Air & Space Museum and Udvar-Hazy Center; the American Art Museum & Renwick Gallery; the American History Museum, the American Indian Museum, the Arts & Industries Building, the Freer and Sackler Galleries; the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden; the Natural History Museum; and the Portrait Gallery

The panda formerly known as "Butterstick" is also just a train ride away! Take the Red Line in the direction of Shady Grove, get off at either Cleveland Park or Woodley Park/National Zoo stop and the National Zoo (with everyone's favorite pandas) is a short walk away.
