Virtual Capclave 2020 Code of Conduct

The Washington Science Fiction Association is committed to creating a professional, safe, friendly, and welcoming environment for all Capclave participants. Everyone is entitled to a harassment-free convention experience, regardless of gender, sexual orientation, disability, race, ethnicity, national origin, immigration status, or religion.

We expect all virtual Capclave participants and speakers to help ensure a safe and positive experience for everyone. Be excellent to each other, show empathy, and help make this a welcoming space to explore speculative fiction.

Examples of unacceptable behavior include but are not limited to:

  • Intimidating, harassing, abusive, discriminatory, derogatory, or demeaning speech or actions.
  • Harmful or prejudicial verbal or written comments or visual images related to gender, sexual orientation, race, religion, disability, or other personal characteristics, including those protected by law.
  • Inappropriate use of nudity and/or sexual images.
  • Inappropriate disruption of meetings or events.
  • Photographing, video or audio recording of presentations without presenter/author's permission.
  • Violating the rules and regulations of the online platform, Zoom, or of the Discord discussion server.

A request to “stop” or “go away” means exactly that. If anyone engages in harassing or unsafe behavior, the convention committee may warn the offender, temporarily remove or mute the offender, or permanently ban the offender from the convention.

The code of conduct is not open to “rules lawyering.” Multiple small infractions are as much of a problem as one large infraction.

Capclave is a convention open to all-ages, and outside of the designated Discord #con-suite-18-plus channel, all conversation should be in the acceptable PG-13 range or lower. If the conversation rating escalates, you will be asked to take it to the #con-suite-18-plus channel.

2020 Election Conversation: Because the 2020 elections are so important, and because they have the potential for overwhelming all other conversations, we ask that conversation about the elections be held in Discord channel #great-election-dumpster-fire. A topic being related to the election does not excuse ignoring the Code of Conduct.

Reporting to the Incident Response Team (IRT)

If you feel that you are being harassed, or if you notice someone engaging in concerning behavior, we respectfully suggest the following:

In Zoom webinars and meetings- please report the situation to the zoom technical host or to the @IRT team on Discord.

In Discord – The #code-of-conduct text channel has a copy of the code and reporting information. Typing @IRT in #code-of-conduct or anywhere in Discord will bring the attention of the Incident Response Team. You do not need to put in personal or sensitive information. You can direct the team to the problem, or you can ask a team member to DM you.

You can also email report@capclave.org, with any problems with a panel, reading, or conversation thread. Tagging the IRT team is the fastest and best way to report a discord problem.

All reports will be kept confidential.

Consequences of misconduct may include:

  • Immediate removal from a meeting without warning
  • Removal of access to the Discord discussion board
  • Removal of access to readings and panels
  • Restrictions from future Capclave meetings and events
